Instructions
Bake the Cake:
Preheat your oven according to the cake mix instructions. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
Prepare the cake batter as directed on the box, substituting 1 cup of Orange Crush soda for part of the water. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake according to the package instructions until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
Prepare the Orange Gelatin:
While the cake is baking, dissolve the orange gelatin mix in 1 cup of boiling water. Once completely dissolved, stir in 1/2 cup of cold Orange Crush soda.
Allow the gelatin mixture to cool to room temperature.
Poke and Fill the Cake:
Once the cake is slightly cooled but still warm, use the end of a wooden spoon or a skewer to poke holes all over the top of the cake, about 1 inch apart.
Pour the cooled orange gelatin mixture over the cake, aiming to fill the holes. Spread evenly with a spatula.
Chill the Cake:
Place the cake in the refrigerator to chill and set for at least 2 hours, or until completely cooled and the gelatin is set.
Add the Topping:
Spread the thawed whipped topping evenly over the top of the chilled cake.
Garnish with orange zest and orange slices, if desired.
Serve:
Slice and serve the Orange Crush Poke Cake chilled. It can be stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
