Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Dish:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or similar size.
Mix the Apple Filling:
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour if using. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
Make the Crisp Topping:
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Add the cold butter pieces to the oat mixture. Using your fingers, a pastry cutter, or two forks, blend the butter into the oat mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts if using.
Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apples in the dish.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
Serve:
Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving. It’s best enjoyed warm.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
