Preparation Steps
Cook penne pasta in salted boiling water according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 7 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
Stir in the marinara sauce and heavy cream. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
Add the cooked penne pasta to the sauce and toss to combine. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Serve warm garnished with extra Parmesan cheese or basil if desired.
